The City of Lodz
The City of Lodz

Lodz, the former textile industry empire, today is a city of modern technologies, culture and grand events. It is a metropolis, where a landscape of industrial architecture mixes with silhouettes of the 20th century office buildings, production halls, cultural and sports buildings.
A small settlement, that in 1423 was granted civic rights, was thriving at the beginning of the 19th century. Lodz became one of the Europe’s biggest and fastest growing textile industry centre. At that time, a new identity of the city - “a promised land” and “a city of many cultures” was created. The city where people of different nationalities and religions shared the same dream of a success and were determined to achieve it together.
Today the rhythm of life in Lodz is no longer driven by factories’ sirens and rattling of looms’ shuttles. The city is still attrac- ting industrialists, who appreciate its central location, close proximity to the capital, investors - friendly policy, scientific and human resources. Lodz authorities undertake many actions in order to improve the city attractiveness - develop the airport, invest in new roads and quality of railway infrastructure. As a result, Lodz is located at the top of attractiveness ratings. It became a place of interest for such powerful companies as: Infosys, BSH, Gillette, Merloni, Fujitsu Services, Hutchinson and other household equipment manufacturers as well as finance and accounting centers of well known companies.
Lodz also constitutes a good example of advanced revitalization processes with Europe’s famous Manufaktura among many. A few years back, architects and designers brought back to life this historic industrial complex of Izrael Poznański and changed it into modern trade, entertainment, culture and recreation centre. Nowadays the biggest challenge for the city is the revitalization process of historic thermal power plant EC-1 together with modernization of the area which is to become a New Centre of Lodz.
In the recent years, an identity of Lodz as a city of culture has been created. Former avant-garde and artistic experiment centre becomes a modern art centre. Museums look after the heritage of pre-war artists and young works of art change postindustrial interiors into avant-garde art centers. Growing every year calendar of Lodz festivals, became a cultural “brand” of our city - “ Festival Lodz”.
Lodz is also a city of young and active people. During the day one can meet them at twenty universities and during the night they can be found in one of Lodz pubs, hundred of which are located along the Piotrkowska street alone. Those who like green areas can spend their time in one of 30 parks, go to Łagiewniki - the largest urban forest in Europe or have fun at “Fala” – a modern aqua park. The multipurpose hall built couple of years ago (one of the biggest building of this type in Poland) hosts the concerts of the world’s biggest artists, sport games and grand fair events.

The Poznanski Palace - First day of the Symposium, 17th September 2013

The Poznanski Palace is known as one of the largest and greatest residence of its type. The Palace (built in XIX century) was bought by Jewish factory-owner Izrael Poznanski in the year 1877. The effort of many architects (mainly Hilary Majewski and Juliusz Jung), designers and artists resulted in the present shape of the building, which is much more decorative and comfortable than others in Lodz. The front of the palace is very interesting and has its ideological program. The building is decorated with copulas, pinnacles, and shields with monogram „P”, garlands of fruit and other architectural details. The main part of the building was designed in neo-baroque style. The main accent of the interior facade is the terraced portico. The palace is functionally connected with a huge cotton production plant, a housing estate for workers and other accom- panying buildings. In the year 1975 the main part of the building was adapted by the Museum of History of City Lodz. Don’t forget to visit beautiful garden, where you can see fabulous sculptures.

Andel's Hotel Lodz - Second and Third day of the Symposium, 18th-19th September 2013
Andel's Hotel Lodz - Second and Third day of the Symposium, 18th-19th September 2013

A red brick façade serves as eye-catcher for the 4-star Andel’s Hotel Lodz. The location is an unusual one: a former textile mill on the grounds of the Manufaktura shopping, art and cultural centre. The innovative archi- tecture is a dynamic weave of colours and forms, glass and textiles, furniture and works of art. The design harmonises wonderfully with the historic substance of the building, creating a hotel experience with a high level of comfort and artistic attraction.
Besides the 277 design rooms, suites and long-stay apartments, the hotel also features a 3,100 m2 conferen- ce and events centre with state-of-the-art equipment, modern architecture and the largest ballroom in the city of Lodz (capacity 800 people).
Topping the large SPA & Fitness Centre area is a glass-enclosed swimming pool on the roof of the hotel. The Restaurant Delight and Oscar’s Bar are popular meeting places for business meals, drinks or specialty coffees. With its panoramic views of the city, the Lounge Room steals the show.
